Women Take Advantage of Gender Specific Programming at BryLin Hospitals....
A woman has many issues in life to handle; family, career, PMS, pregnancy & menopause. Many women have also experienced sexual abuse or domestic violence in their life. All of these life issues can have a dramatic affect on a woman’s mental health and well being at one time or another.
As a woman, you move through different stages in your life, you enjoy and cherish the many happy times as well as face some obstacles and challenges. In fact, many of the things that bring great joy and fulfillment, such as close relationships, a promotion, having a baby, or buying a home, can also cause stress on one’s mental health. At some point in life, you may have to cope with a traumatic life event such as dealing with a loved one's serious illness or death, a loss of a job, domestic violence or possibly a sexual assault.
Changes in physical health can affect mental health as well. For example, changing hormone levels due to a woman’s monthly cycle can affect mood, causing irritability and tearfulness. Women are also at greater risk for problems such as depression and anxiety during puberty, after having a baby, and in the years just before menopause. Nearly twice as many women as men will develop depression and related disorders at some point in their lives.
BryLin Hospitals’ inpatient “Women’s Mental Health Program” is providing treatment for women who are experiencing psychiatric disorders related to emotional and/or hormonal disturbances. BryLin’s Vice President of Patient Care Services, Marlene Longdon, says “The program’s philosophy is based on a holistic approach of treatment emphasizing the unique needs of our female patients. The goal of the program is to provide a safe and supportive therapeutic environment where women can work with the treatment team to address the complex issues that have resulted in a need for in-patient care.”
Like diabetes or heart disease, a mental illness can be treated successfully. Treatment can help one to get back to enjoying life, not only for one’s self but for one’s family. You don’t have to suffer in silence, get professional help.
