Hilbert College names coach to second new full-time soccer position
Hilbert College inked its second head soccer coach to the pair of newly-created full-time positions at the school.

Kelly Starchok-Gillow will begin her first season heading the women’s soccer program at Hilbert College in 2011 after more than 10 years of coaching experience at the college and club levels.

She was appointed to the position created thanks to Hilbert receiving a National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III Strategic Alliance Matching Grant. Hilbert was one of only seven institutions in the U.S. selected to receive this highly competitive three-year grant.

Starchok-Gillow will also serve as the athletics department’s compliance and student services coordinator, overseeing and building on a recently-launched program developed specifically for at-risk student-athletes at the college. In addition, she will oversee all student-athlete’s eligibility matters.

“The new position’s coaching responsibilities will allow student-athletes to have greater access and more interaction with their head coach, who oftentimes serve as a key mentor for college-level athletes,” said Hilbert’s athletics director Susan Viscomi, who approaches her second year at that post. “This full-time position will also allow for more time and resources to identify and attract higher-caliber student-athletes to Hilbert, an aspect that will, in the long-run, enhance the program’s competitiveness.”

The men’s soccer position also became full-time for the first time this year and just last month that position went to Jeff Panik, a former Professional Arena Soccer League and Major Indoor Soccer League professional player, who also brings more than 10 years of coaching experience. Panik takes over for former Hilbert coach, Tim Kronenwetter.

That newly created position will also include the title of athletic facilities coordinator. He performed similar duties while at North Country Community College in Saranac Lake, where he oversaw all sporting events on campus and managed the indoor and outdoor facilities, in addition to coaching.

Starchok-Gillow takes over for James Ruggiero, who was the longest tenured head coach at the college before announcing his resignation this summer. Ruggiero led the women’s soccer program from 1999 through the 2010 season, compiling a 84-111-12 record in 12 years.

She joins the staff as a result of the NCAA grant designed to provide funding to Division III institutions seeking to develop professional administrative opportunities to enhance diversity and inclusion within an institution’s athletics program.

Starchok-Gillow comes from Genesee Community College, where over her four seasons, she led the Cougars to the National Junior College Athletic Association’s national tournament in 2010 and became the NJCAA Division III District A Champions and Region 3 champions in both 2009 and 2010. In 2007 and again three years later, GCC earned the Western New York Athletic Conference championship. The 2009 squad was honored with the NJCAA Division III national tournament Sportsmanship Award.

Her personal accolades include being named the NSCAA/Mondo Junior College National Northeast Coach of the Year in 2010, the NJCAA Region III Coach of the Year in 2009 then again the next season and the New York State ODP Coach of the Year in 2008.

Starchok-Gillow served as an assistant coach at Canisius College from 2001 to 2004 and has been with Empire United Soccer Academy since 2001. Beginning in 2006, Starchok-Gillow assumed a head coaching position with the Olympic Development Program. Also at GCC in Batavia, Starchok-Gillow served as an adjunct professor in the health and physical education division and expanded her responsibilities within the department by assisting as a co-sports information director.

A graduate of the University at Buffalo with a bachelor of arts degree in early childhood development in 2001, Starchok-Gillow then earned her master’s degree in education from Canisius. She currently holds her USSF National C License Certification.
